[RAFAELLA]

DlSASTER

I watched in terror as Ralph fired his ray gun, and a wave of purple light hit first Tim and then Jordan.

Side by side, they crumpled to the floor.

I wanted to rush in to save them, but I had nothing to use against Ralph, and I was sure that the moment I came out of hiding he would zap me, too. Then there would be no one to take word of what had happened up to the embassy.

So I stayed crouched where I was. It felt cowardly, but I couldn’t think of any better way to help the boys.

My stomach knotting and twisting, I watched Ralph load Tim and Jordan into the trunk of the limo. Then he climbed into the driver’s seat and started the engine.

The instant the limo headed up the tunnel, I bolted out of my hiding place and raced for the elevator.

Seconds later I was back in the embassy.

I ran to the kitchen, where Pleskit had promised to wait for me. He was sitting there, looking nervous, while Shhh-foop slid around trying to entice him to eat.

“Pleskit!” I cried. “I have to talk to you!”

He excused himself and hurried out into the hall with me.

“What is it?” he asked. “Did you find out something? Where are Jordan and Tim?”

“Ralph kidnapped them!”

Pleskit let out the most horrible odor I had ever smelled, and for a second I thought he was going to fall over. But he grabbed his sphen-gnut-ksher and pulled it up straight, as if forcing himself to stay standing.

“We’ve got to tell your Fatherly One,” I said.

Pleskit shook his head. “We can’t. He’s not here.”

“Not here? But he’s supposed to meet me at the studio today for that show with Mort Sludge.” I glanced at my watch. “In less than two hours!”

“He’ll be back in time for that,” said Pleskit. “But right now he’s in the Middle East, having a meeting with some sheik or something. Oh, if only they hadn’t taken McNally away from

me.”

“Well, we’ll have to get someone else,” I said. “What about Barvgis?”

“He’s with the Fatherly One.”

“Beezle Whompis?”

“The same.”

“They all went off and left you?” I asked.

“Rafaella, I am old enough not to need a babysitter. Even if I did need one, Shhh-foop has a Galaxy One Child Care Certification. The embassy is well guarded and fortified with more protective devices than you can imag-

ine—”

“All right, all right,” I said. “I was just surprised. You don’t need to justify it. But we have to figure out what to do. What about Wakkam Akkim?”

“She has gone to Tibet to meet with some holy men.”

“All right, let’s just call the police!” I cried.

I had held off on this suggestion because I felt the situation was probably something that the embassy could handle better. But we were down to our last straw.

Pleskit looked startled at the suggestion, but then he bent his sphen-gnut-ksher in acknowledgment.

There was only one problem. When we called the police and explained the situation, the guy who answered the phone said, “Yeah, yeah, yeah.
